Help us deliver like never before

As our Mail Sorting Officer at our Townsville Mail Centre, you’ll be working at a Mail & Parcel Processing Centre where you’ll be responsible for manually sorting mail in preparation for delivery the next day. You’ll play a key role in supporting our Posties, who provide a vital service to our local community every single day.

You’ll be working together with a friendly team of like-minded people, and your community relies on you, and it doesn’t get better than that!  


You’ll be  

  • Assisting with the processing of standard letters, large letters, small parcels and Express Post articles 
  • Manually handle and sort mail articles in cases where it cannot be machine sorted  
  • Manually load and unload mail from mail bags, trays, containers and metal cages (Unit Loading Devices) 
  • Working across sophisticated processing equipment and lines 
  • Operating and using load shifting equipment such as hand pallet devices and stackers whilst cooperating with operations staff to get the mail into the facility


About you

  • You are flexible with working additional hours if required 
  • You have a great memory, excellent attention to detail and can lift up to 16kgs of Mail and Parcels regularly 
  • You enjoy physical indoor work and are ok to stand for long periods of time
  • You are comfortable working around often noisy machinery and vehicles in the sorting centre
  • Experience operating manual pallet jacks or stackers is advantageous but not mandatory
  • A forklift licence is highly desirable for this position but not mandatory

Training and Support

At Australia Post, our training and induction programs offer support to ensure we set you up for success. You will attend an induction in your first week with our Learning and Development Team followed by a site-specific induction at your respective facility and additional online learning modules. As a new employee, you will receive one-on-one coaching, followed by regular check-ins with your Manager and Trainer to track progress, provide feedback, and discuss any support needed. We assess development at the end of each month during your probationary period, with adjustments or additional training as required. The program includes site-specific inductions and hands-on training, building employees up to full delivery capacity within six weeks. Our approach is flexible, ensuring long-term success and continuous growth.
