Australia Post is delivering for all Australians. From the vehicles that we drive, to the small businesses that make our communities thrive. We’re delivering for the environment, for our communities, for our customers and for our people. We’re moving forward and we want you to come along for the ride.
Background
This product manager role focusing on viability is a key part of our business and provides financial modelling insights on proposed products.
This role is in Australia Post’s Freight Services area, within this group there are 6 teams that focus on insights, go to market, product management, pricing and experience.
This role sits within our Insights, Strategy and Analysis team and will collaborate heavily with our Product Management team. Within our product management team there is a Product Lab that will conceive new product ideas and a desirability lead who tests their desirability.
The new product ideas will then come to the person we are hiring as a viability lead, who will assess the commercial viability of such an idea, before passing on ideas that pass that test to a feasibility lead who sits in the product management team. There will be a lot of cross team collaboration and for this role, we are looking for a craft leader in assessing viability.
What you’ll deliver with us
The role of the Product Viability Lead is to evaluate business strategies, inform product development, and provide analytical support for decision-making that affect the strategic direction, with a focus on improving customer experiences and achieving sustainable outcomes.
The Lead oversees and deliver the end-to-end solution, provide strategic direction, develop robust and compelling content to back up our proposals, and incorporates market analysis and competitive insights to substantiate the evidence presented.
The position involves cultivating a strong understanding of the CEP industry, retail market, generating and disseminating thought leadership, as well as overseeing the budget and forecasts.
This role experienced in defining commercial product constructs, provides overarching support to all squads within the Parcel Product team —including the B2B, B2C, C2C, OOH, The Lab squads and future emerging squads as necessary—establishing viability as a critical craft and perspective. The Viability Lead asks critical questions and seeks appropriate data to arrive at answers about the financial, commercial, and market sustainability of every initiative, so as to assist the Lead PMs with their prioritising of the work pipeline and strategic narrative defining efforts.
They also foster deep relationships across the organisation with diverse teams such as GTM, Pricing, Finance and other adjacent teams to develop a viability perspective. Some of the questions they seek to obtain data to answer are:
• What will it cost to turn this design into a functioning product?
• Is the required capital investment available, and does it align with strategic priorities?
• What pricing model should be applied, and can the business make a profit?
• When will a positive return on investment (ROI) be achieved, and what is the ongoing ROI based on NPV and DCF calculations?
• Is the product’s revenue, profit, and cost model sustainable over the long term?
• How will we create sustained competitive advantages with this initiative?
• What differentiates this solution, and why would customers choose it over competitors?
As the custodian of the viability lens, this role combines financial acumen with strategic insight, working across teams to guide investment decisions and ensure alignment with Australia Post’s long-term goals. By fostering a deep understanding of viability and commercial product architecture, the Viability Lead empowers the Product team to prioritize initiatives that are not only profitable but also sustainable, competitive, and value-driven.
